Kensington

A building update for the old 5,300 sf improv club in Scottsdale, AZ. It was remodeled and expanded to 7,700 sf multi-tenant commercial building.

The concept for this was to create a hip, industrial-modern building that formed 3 separate spaces.

The main tenant is for a gym that encompasses two-thirds of the building while the other two tenants split the remainder.

With the addition of new steel beams, the interior was freed up to allow for an open feeling. Masonry walls were sandblasted and exposed along with the roof framing.

The exterior was redesigned with a stacked masonry office addition, custom steel bucket windows, and a steel canopy entry.

Huang-Reid

Complete gut and remodel/addition for an old Spanish style home, sitting in the hills of Phoenix, AZ.

The new home owner fell in love with the property, but wanted a ‘California Chic’ look that captured all the amazing views of the lot.

We expanded the busy 3,100 sf to a 4,500 sf open home with vaulted ceilings, a completely new interior layout, and new exterior.

Everybody Loves Flowers

Retail and work space for Everybody Loves Flowers - a floral and event decorating business in Gilbert, AZ.

Features include:

hidden office space behind a custom barn door

floating display shelves with sliding glass partitions

large C.I.P. concrete work surface

walk-in flower cooler

The client wanted a chic look to convey her style of business. Reclaimed barn wood was used throughout, both in it’s natural state as well as with a white wash finish. We introduced steel, glass and concrete to give industrial accents. The idea is to have the design compliment the pops of color that come from the flowers and retail items on display.

River Bunker

A 1 bedroom house with a full bathroom, kitchenette/living room and roof deck located in Can Tho, Vietnam.

This addition to the main house is separate and can function on its own as a mother-in-law suite or separate rental space.

Architecturally, it stands out from the surrounding neighbors while utilizing familiar materials.

In a sea of concrete and asphalt, the grass-filled pavers bring a softness while still allowing motorbike travel on top as storage of the bikes inside at night for security is common. The concrete structure is made to resemble horizontally, pressed bamboo, a common plant within the area. Large, sliding glass doors open out to a small patio and walkway to bring an exterior connection with the river. Additionally, a plant-filled roof deck provides an additional private space for the tight footprint.

Regroup Roasters

Corporate headquarters for Regroup Roasters. This location has coffee roasting, offices and a cafe. Adaptive reuse project in Tempe, AZ.

The task was to refresh the exterior to a modern exterior that would stand-out on the busy street of Scottsdale Road.

This was accomplished through a few ways:

  • squaring off the parapet and re-stuccoing the walls

  • addition of masonry site accent walls and landscape

  • New patio steel structure and trellis covered patio

  • New front door entry, angled to be visible from drivers

The interior was re-worked to create a clean, bright space. Custom floating steel and wood stairs were added as a feature for the cafe and the entrance to the 2nd floor offices.

Kung Fu Tea

The first location of Kung Fu Tea in Arizona. This is a small location situated on Mill Ave and 5th Street. The space constraints called for most of the interior being utilized for kitchen and ordering, leaving seating only outdoors. Bands of perforated metal define the patio as they run vertically and overhead, with plans of vines growing on them to provide a cool effect from the Arizona sun.

Homes of Hope Suva,Fiji

In Progress

Homes of Hope is a non-profit organization located in Suva, Fiji. It's mission is to is to create a culture of freedom for women and children and to stop the cycles of forced sex.

The Homes of Hope campus is comprised of several buildings including: offices, homes, training facilities, education, and volunteer quarters. As a trusted source in the area, Homes of Hope wanted a multi-purpose building that could benefit the community.

Sitting on a hillside, we designed a two story structure, with direct access from the road to the 2nd level while the lower level is carved into the side of the mountain.

The lower level contains (3) three indoor training classrooms and (1) one outdoor workroom. Access to these spaces ties into a path leading from an existing school facility. The upper level consists of the main entry, a full kitchen, storage and dining hall, which can also function for weddings, receptions and special community events. The main dining hall captures a breathtaking view of the large valley that the HOH campus resides in.

Street access is from the upper level of the building where a bell tower and prayer garden provide a buffer leading into the entrance. Old Fijian building techniques are used in the design of this building to keep with the culture's beauty. All materials are from the area, keeping the work and resources within the land to further strengthen the community.

Ethiopia Studio

In Progress

Ethiopia Studio is a collaborative design project led by Jack DeBartolo, which includes architects, landscape architects and graphic designers. The mission of this group was to provide design services for the development of a new children's campus in Soddo, Ethiopia.

Situated in the remote village of Wolaitta, the new campus will be a beacon of hope. With many children abandoned in the area on a regular basis, this new campus will provide housing for such children as well as education. Along with housing orphans, there will be a food production facility, making a supplemental powder that combats malnourishment, which will further help sustain the small community.

The campus is an on-going project, being built by locals within the community.
